I come back to my LJ after months to some announcement that some tweeting, peeping function is back? LJ friends out there, this mommy is still trying to figure out buying stuff for Back to School, fancy techno LJ stuff does not compute!

Translation: What's going on? Should I be worried? Help!

Technically and Grammatically Inept,
mommy

Hi hon - essentially, LJ has opened access to postings and comments (even comments on locked posts) to users of Twitter, Facebook and other sites. So, say you posted a locked posts about the kiddies and someone commented. They could then Tweet that comment. While the Twitter or FB folks can't see the actual entry, they can see the comment (which might tell them what the entry was), they can comment (which defeats the purpose of disabling annonymous comments), and the "access denied" message includes a link to recent entries on your journal.

This is not restricted to comments (though it's easier from there). On every entry, there is a function called 'share this' that lets people do the same thing. The biggest issue is that there is not a way to turn off this feature at our end - an opt out.

Now, as to whether you should be worried ... well, that's really up to you. If you've completely kept your personal life and LJ life separate, I would not worry too much. In my case, I'm in a profession where it would not just be hugely embarassing for posts to be found but it could cost me clients. That's why I made the switch - just a greater sense of security and control. That is why many people are switching.

I'm not really keeping my LJ, Twitter and the rest separate, but I still don't like this "sharing" thing. Oh, and I have a few Dreamwidth invites, if anyone wants...

I know there's a fix that you can put in your LJ code but I'm not sure what it is/how it works.

"...if you are concerned you can add a bit of code which removes the choice for FB or Twitter commenting.

In Journal menu -> Journal Style. -> Customize Theme -> in the Left navigation bar choose Custom CSS -> insert ".b-repost-item {display:none}" minus the quotation marks. "

It'll remove the instant "repost to facebook/twitter" option, but it won't remove the option for people to log in and answer comments under their Facebook/twitter usernames.

I couldn't find the "insert" option / just pasted it into the box I saw - is there a way to check if it's working?

You can look on your own journal, beneath the comment/message box. Just click on Leave a message, and then beneath that box. Below mine here there is the "repost to Facebook/Twitter option". They should have gone on your journal.

:) Hope that works.

It has "repost to" but no options. Thank you!

I'm not worried about it. It's basically what teachwriteslash says, but honestly, it all depends on what you reveal. I mean, if your LJ has no personal information, it's not that big of a deal. Just avoid saying full names and addresses (let alone any more detailed info) and things should be pretty much the same as always.

Do I think the whole affair is pretty dumb? Yes. I'm sure they are getting funds for doing the linking, but ah well.

No need to worry unless you do write a lot about your personal life or give away any details where people could identify you.

While I have FB and Twitter, nothing on LJ is remotely related to either so it would take some fascinating bit of digging to connect either account.

But, if you are concerned you can add a bit of code which removes the choice for FB or Twitter commenting.

In Journal menu -> Journal Style. -> Customize Theme -> in the Left navigation bar choose Custom CSS -> insert ".b-repost-item {display:none}" minus the quotation marks.

It won't get rid of the choice to answer as someone Logged In under a Facebook account or Twitter account, but it will remove the "repost to FB/Twitter" choice beneath the comment boxes.

Teach explained pretty thoroughly, so I don't have much to add. I do tend to post personal stuff to my journal sometimes, so I now have an account at Dreamwidth (same username) that I will be posting from. I'll still keep my LJ and have everything set to cross-post from Dreamwidth, there will just be some entries that you won't be able to comment on from LJ.
The codes that madder_rose gave are great for removing the 'repost to' choice on comments. But the only way to remove the 'Share This!' option from an entry is to friends-lock it.
Frankly, I don't care if someone reposts my fanfic entries, but I'd rather not take the chance with personal information.
